Abstract
Ceramic membrane technology was applied to the treatment of three petrochemical plant waste streams. Precipitated heavy-metal solids were filtered with ceramic alumina microfiltration membranes at a vinyl chloride monomer plant. The ceramic membrane pilot system also successfully treated emulsions of 1,2-dichloroethane, water, and solids. After pretreatment with ferric chloride and hydrochloric acid, membrane-filtration treatment of a linear alkylbenzene oily wastewater stream yielded water with less than 5 ppm of oil and grease.
