This article discusses the materials that have been used in producing 3D images of topographical data. This is because the demand for producing these images is increasing due to the well acceptedness of using geospatial technology by the public. The main application of this technology is in Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS has been widely used in various applications and fields such as scientific investigations, resource management, asset management, environmental impact assessment, urban planning, cartography, criminology, history, sales, marketing, and logistics. Previously, 3D images were produced manually by using cardboard sheet. The advancement of 3D printing technology helps to accelerate the process of building 3D images effectively and one is able to produce more accurate representation of the real conditions. The most commonly used 3D printing approach in geospatial technology is fused deposition method (FDM). It uses filament type of material, which is usually made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or polylactic acid (PLA). This article discusses in details the impact performances of both materials including the testing procedures and analysis of withstanding the impact. Based on the experimental data, it shows that ABS has greater impact performance that PLA, which makes it the preferred choice to be used by FDM in producing 3D images for the topographical data.
