Abstract
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is one of the most common polymers. Its anti electrostatic property made it useful in the electronic industry. CO2 laser cutting is widely used to produce electronic equipment from ABS. A comprehensive study of CO2 laser cutting parameters’ influence on the mechanical and workability properties in order to produce accurate parts is the focus of current research. To achieve this aim, variable factors were examined and, between them, laser power and cutting velocity are considered. To determine the cutting mechanism, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were carried out. The laser cutting workability was investigated by evaluating kerf characteristics containing average kerf width, taper angle of cut edge and burr, also form and dimensional accuracy containing dimensional deviation and accuracy of the corner angle. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) and morphology of the cut surface were examined by an optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. Tensile strength and impact resistance of produced samples as the mechanical properties representative were studied in different processing conditions. The results showed that the increasing of power and cutting velocity improve the dimensional precise and cut forms, also all outputs excluding kerf width. In order to limit the kerf width, a higher cutting velocity and low power are found effective. The experiment results reveal that the cut surface condition is a deciding factor on the mechanical properties. Findings also clearly show the tensile strength and impact resistance of produced parts can be attributed to laser factors.
