Abstract
Styrene/butadiene rubber has been used as binding matrix for the finely powdered dry leaves of Phytolacca dioica L plant. Saponin is the effective constituent in the berries and leaves of the plant that kills the snails of Biomphalaria alexandrina, the intermediate host of Schistosomiasis. The effective saponin was 4.1% in leaves and 5.9% in the berries of the plant. The release rate of saponin in water depended on the concentration of the plant leaves in the matrix. Hence the release rate of saponin followed the order: 200>150>100>>50 phr. The release kinetics of saponin were zero order. The physicomechanical properties of styrene/butadiene rubber were enhanced by increasing the concentration of the plant leaves to 50 phr, then a gradual deleterious effect was observed by increasing the concentration up to 200 phr.
