Abstract
A study was conducted to demonstrate anionic polymerization behavior of 2-ethoxymethyl-1-3-butadiene that had ethereal group. The 2-ethoxymethyl-1-3- butadiene was synthesized from isoprene and was rinsed three times with hexane to remove mineral oil. It was stirred throughout night with small amount of LiAlH4 and distilled under high vacuum conditions. It was also diluted with THF or heptane and used for anionic polymerization using break-seal method. It was observed that characteristic green color turned to dark brown immediately after the addition of the THF solution of 2-ethoxymethyl-1-3- butadiene to potassium napthalenide (K-Naph) and changed to deep red color in 18 hours. Considerable amount of monomer was recovered from the polymerization mixture after polymerization.
