Abstract
The production of low-lead gasoline is now required in Saudi Arabia since Pb pollution has reached a dangerous level in that nation. Methyl Tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) will serve as the high octane blending agent for motor gasoline during the Pb phasedown. The status of MTBE blending in Saudi refineries is examined, and the role of a large MTBE plant slated for startup in late 1987 is discussed. The plant will be part of an integrated complex producing butadiene and other compounds, and will have a capacity of 500,000 tpy of MTBE.
