Abstract
Since 2001, Daimler has been selling Sprinter vans in the NAFTA market with diesel engines [as Freightliner, Chrysler (from 2003 to 2009) and as Mercedes-Benz (since 2010)]. In 2007, the V6 3L diesel engine OM642 was integrated into the Sprinter together with a particulate filter system to meet the NAFTA07 emission legislation [1]. In 2010, the goal was to meet the tightened NOx emissions standards of NAFTA10 by implementing the SCR system (BLUETEC) and simultaneously satisfy the customer demands for more power and torque without reducing the fuel efficiency of the OM642 [2, 3] 3L V6 diesel engine. In the third quarter of 2013, Daimler will introduce the downsized 2.1L in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine with a 2-stage turbocharger and 2000 bar injection system together with the new fuel economy optimized 7-speed automatic transmission (7G-TRONIC PLUS). For further improvements in fuel economy, the rear axle and other ancillary components are optimized regarding fuel efficiency. Altogether this results in a highly fuelefficient powertrain concept which is built into the new Sprinter van. To meet the tightened emission standards of NAFTA14 (LEVIII ULEV), a second generation of the BlueTEC system and new exhaust system components are integrated into the van. A key challenge was to optimize the engine and exhaust system calibration in such a way to fulfill all the new emission and OBD demands, maximize improvements in fuel economy, CO2 emissions and driving comfort (lowered noise and vibration levels, drivability similar to a passenger car).
