The condensates of sodium naphthalene 2-sulphonate and formaldehyde, have been fractionated by gel permeation chromatography on a scale large enough for the separation of 20 g. samples. The fractions were characterised by molecular weight and relative viscosity. The separation order was found to be unusual, this being nonamer, octamer, (heptamer) monomer, dimer... hexamer (heptamer). The reason for this separation order is, we believe, a combination of adsorption and electrostatic repulsion of the polyelectrolyte by the "Sephadex" gel. © 1972 Dr. Dietrich Steinkopff Verlag.
