Abstract
Benzo[a]pyrene dissolved in benzene was irradiated by u.v. light of wavelength greater than 280 mu. Oxygen was present in the benzene. The irradiation product was fractionated by alumina column chromatography, isolating three crystalline compounds. These compounds were determined as 6,12-benzo[a]pyrenequinone, 1,6-benzo[a]pyrenequinone and 3,6-benzo[a]-pyrenequinone by their melting points, data of elementary analysis, and i.r. as well as u.v. absorption spectra.
