Simulated Ektaprint C* color print process effluent was tested for its toxicity to fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas Rafinesque. The mixed effluent and each of the five separate component solutions were so tested. Most of these tests were run under simulated daylight conditions (sunlight plus skylight) using a Xenon-arc light source. The majority of photographic processing chemicals which were studied are at the most, only slightly toxic to these fish. Most of the more toxic chemicals are present in photographic processing effluents in such dilute concentrations that they pose little hazard to fish. The relation-ship between the intensity of illumination of aquaria and the concentration of sodium ferrocyanide was evaluated. A list is given of the toxicities of several photographic processing chemicals to fish. Mice fed a diet of fish that had lived in dilute processing effluent showed no adverse effect.
