The minimum requirements of a healthy home include the claim not to impose any harm on people's health. In the case of some pollutants there is a need to establish special hygienic limit values for indoor air which may differ from those already valid for outdoor air. A project has been developed in Hungary to establish hygienic limit values for indoor air by using epidemiological methods. Among the most important indoor air pollutants formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide were the first two compounds under study. The association was studied between these concentrations or the total daily exposures calculated from these data and the changes in the health status of the examined 9 year old children. The main features and the preliminary results and conclusions as well as present status and further developments of the project will be presented.
