Although federal appropriations to the TVA Natl Fertilizer Development Center, AL, have been slashed by more than 20% since 1985, research is resulting in process improvements and the use of alternative feed materials to lower costs and/or improve fertilizer product quality. Advances in the falling curtain evaporative cooling process for granulating urea have enhanced product storage and handling characteristics. Fertilizer product costs are reduced and an environmentally benign product is realized when calcium lignosulfonate is substituted for formaldehyde as a conditioning agent.
