Abstract
The author reviews the current state of anaerobic biotechnology, with particular reference to its use in the anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewaters. Anaerobic treatment is compared to aerobic treatment. The various factors to be considered when designing an anaerobic treatment process are discussed, including the nature and behaviour of methanogens, the nutrient requirements, the presence of potential toxicants to methanogens, such as heavy metal catalysts, pharmaceuticals, detergents, disinfectants, solvents, inhibitors, and formaldehyde, the suitability of the substrate, selection of the most suitable process configuration, and the choice of reactor. Several full-scale installations are discussed. A bibliography of 97 references is appended.
