Chemicals used to preserve specimens in a university dissection laboratory can be toxic to students. Most storage/wetting fluids used in these situations contain formalin and phenol, whose vapors are toxic. The use of a 1% phenoxyethanol solution is recommended for specimen preservation. Results of using this solution to preserve sharks and cats in the laboratory are described, and safety steps to improve the laboratory are proposed.
