On 25 July 2010, Mr David Sharkey (Clogherhead, Co. Louth; Skipper of the MFV "Rose of Sharon II S70") captured an exceptionally large Angler Fish (Lophius piscatorius Linnaeus, 1758) weighing 68.265 kg and measuring 186 cm TL (Fig. 1) while trawling at a depth of 144 m on the Labadie Bank (50[degrees] 04'N, 08[degrees] 58'W), which is approximately 140 km due south of Crosshaven, Cork. The current specimen represents the largest authenticated from Irish waters to date and a cast has been set up for display by the National Museum of Ireland courtesy of Lett Doran & Co. Ltd., Howth, Co Dublin (NMINH:2012.72.1). The specimen's esca, or fishing lure, has been preserved separately in formalin, then alcohol (NMINH:2012.71.1) and was used to estimate the specimen's age as 20 years old (Helen McCormick and Marcin Blaszkowski 2012 pers. comm.). The maximum published age for L. piscatorius is 25 years (Quincoces et al. 1998).
