The cooperative efforts of the public and private sectors to generate data needed for improvements in building envelope energy efficiencies in the U.S. are surveyed. Emphasis is placed on the appropriate use of insulating materials to control heat flow in residences. Management of much of the DOE lead role in the Nat'l program for building thermal envelope systems and insulating materials is delegated to ORNL. Research studies have addressed the energy efficiency of urea-formaldehyde, cellulose, and mineral fiber materials.
