Abstract
The stabilization of sulphite by formaldehyde was demonstrated by comparing the ion chromatograms with and without the addition of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde had to be added to the eluent to achieve complete stabilization. A method was developed for the determination of sulphite in the presence of large excess of sulphate and/or thiosulphate in fixers and photographic effluents at concentrations normally found (approximately 8 mg per litre) with a relative standard deviation of 3.7 per cent.
