Abstract
The effects on nitrification of chemicals commonly used for control and treatment of fish parasites were studied in recirculating systems containing channel catfish, with oyster shell as a buffer to provide stable pH values. Therapeutic levels of formalin, malachite green, formalin in combination with malachite green, copper sulphate, potassium permanganate, and sodium chloride did not affect nitrification, but 5 mg of methylene blue per litre resulted in cessation of nitrification for 16 days, indicated by a rapid rise in ammonia and stable nitrate concentrations.
