Formalin is widely used as disinfectant in fumigation of setters and hatchers as well as for disinfection of chicken houses by fumigation or spraying. Two poultry houses were disinfected through spraying with a 10% formalin solution. On the following day, out of 12,000 healthy 5-week-old turkeys, 6,000 were transferred from an untreated brooding house to the formalin sprayed houses. Three days later turkeys started dying in the formalin treated houses reaching a mortality rate of 3% within the next 3 days. The affected turkeys showed an edematous swelling of the integumentum under the lower beak. In their mouths yellowing-white membranes especially under the tongue were observed. Upon post-mortem examination these membranes depicted diphtheroid lesions. The lesions were limited to the mouth region. The oesophagus, crop, remaining gut and the respiratory organs were not affected.
