Abstract
Transketolases (EC 2.2.1.1, TK), enzymes that require thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) as a cofactor, catalyse the transfer of a two-carbon ketol unit from xylulose-5-phosphate to any of a variety of aldehydic acceptors. In this communication we analyse the sequences of all currently sequenced transketolases and show that the RecP protein is homologous to a family of transketolases including formaldehyde transketolase of yeasts. Of these enzymes, RecP is most similar to the E. coli transketolase, i.e. 41 % identity within a region that encompasses the entirety of both proteins. RecP (656 residues) is of the same length as other well-characterized transketolases.
