A review is presented of available techniques for solidifying liquids, sludges, slurries, contaminated soils and sediments derived from a variety of processes. Portland cement and lime-based pozzolana were the most frequently used solidification agents, though Portland cement was less effective with organics. Thermoplastic resins had the advantage that they could deal with very soluble contaminants, and organic polymers (typically, urea-formaldehyde) were specifically used for nuclear wastes. In-situ treatment was increasingly desirable as it was less expensive and could yield a high cleanup rate eg was backhoe mixing which could be carried out in a pit or lagoon.
