Geochemical and biogeochemical aspects of geological storage are described, starting with a discussion of the chemical basis of CO2 hydration and the geochemical reactions that lead to mineral trapping. Geochemical processes in the caprock, geochemical reaction kinetics, and the impact of impurities in a captured CO2 stream on geochemical reactions are discussed. Geochemical issues specific to storage in carbonate aquifers are described, as well as the geochemical aspects of CO2 reaching shallow aquifers. Reactive transport modeling is introduced, addressing geochemical impacts on fluid flow and geomechanics. The biogeochemical aspects of geological storage are discussed, including impact on microbial communities, biofilm growth, and enhanced biomineralization. Finally the possibility of subsurface microbial recycling of CO2 to methane is briefly described.
