Abstract
This chapter gives a description of phenol/formaldehyde resins. It includes the discovery of resinous substances. Derivatives of phenol and formaldehyde that are suitable for use in phenol/formaldehyde resins are discussed extensively in this chapter. This chapter summarizes the applications, uses, and properties of the monomers of phenol and formaldehyde. Special additives are also discussed briefly in the chapter, including the applications and the reasons for using scavengers. The mechanism of curing has been investigated using model compounds and different types of mechanisms are discussed for each method of curing. The properties, functions, and uses of phenol/formaldehyde resins are summarized. Some special points and applications are discussed briefly in the special formulations that include their special properties. Finally, several test methods are described that are commonly used to characterize phenolic resins. This chapter concludes by considering the fundamental applications of phenol/formaldehyde resins.
