Abstract
Microporous PKS activated carbon prepared in the work exhibited Type 1 isotherm without hysteresis with pore size of 2.01 nm, high surface area of 698 m2/g, high affinity for the CO2, and low affinity for CH4. When the adsorbent was used in PSA, it was found to be able to capture and recover CO2 and CH4 from high CO2 content natural gas surrogate effectively. The highest CO2 purity of 94.7% and recovery of 90.2% from the original CO2 purity of 70 vol% was achieved by PSA operated at 60 s of adsorption and blowdown time. The highest CH4 purity of 85.7% from the original CH4 purity of 30 vol% was also observed during PSA operation, but at the expense of low recovery of 54.2%. On the other hand, UiO-66 adsorbent prepared in the work did not perform as expected due to the competitive affinity of the adsorbent for CO2 and CH4, respectively. The adsorbent exhibited Type II isotherm with Type A hysteresis yielded the highest CH4 purity of 41.8% and recovery of 69.7% at longer adsorption and blowdown time of 120 s. The highest CO2 purity and recovery by using UiO-66 adsorbent was 72.5% and 51.8%, respectively.
