Abstract
Methanogens are prokaryotes that produce methane gas for their energy metabolism. These Archaea are widely diverse taxonomically and may be divided into three groups based on their pathway of methane production, those that utilize CO2, acetate, or methyl compounds as substrates. Methanogens contribute to the increase in atmospheric methane and global climate change. In addition, methanogens in the human gut may contribute to obesity, and methanogens in rice paddies may be specifically adapted to O2 tolerance.
