1.1. The larvae of S. rupestris settle very readily on Lithothamnion polymorphum, but not on other coralline algae. They seem reluctant to settle on smooth slates, but do so abundantly if these have been soaked in aqueous extracts of Lithothamnion. Evidently some active factor is transferred to the slates. This will pass through a dialysis membrane of average pore diameter 24Å. Its effectiveness is reduced by boiling or treatment with formaldehyde. In the absence of this factor, settlement is somewhat stimulated by physical roughness of the substratum and rather more so by soaking in sea water.
