Abstract
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the construction and design of six-, eight- and twelve-cylinder engines. The chapter illustrates the normal arrangement of cranks in a six-throw crankshaft, discussing dynamic balance in context of the same. To obtain good distribution of the fuel to all cylinders, it is desirable to arrange the inductions alternately in the front and rear halves of the engine. This is elaborated with the help of a circle diagram. In this context, the example of Jaguar A J6 engine is illustrated. Other examples of such engines are Rover 2.3/2.6-1itre E series engines, Ford V-six range, and Mercedes Ml12 V6 engines. Eight cylinder engines are then explained, with the firing order, balancing, and torsional oscillation. The difficulties met in the design of eight cylinder engines are also highlighted. A British V-eight engine is an example of an eight cylinder engine. Finally, the chapter explains twelve cylinder engines, of which, an example is the Jaguar 5.3-1itre V-twelve.
