The effect of the addition of N2O on product yields in the radiolysis of methane over molecular sieve 5A has been studied. Ethylene and propylene were preferentially produced compared to the corresponding alkanes, in addition to the selective formation of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons, when methane containing 6 mol% N2O was irradiated by electron beams at 480°C. It was found that the added N2O reacts not only with alkanes produced from the radiolysis of methane but also reactant methane.
