Abstract
Equilibrium data on the adsorption of methane, ethane, propane, and n-butane on pearls of a silica gel are discussed in terms of virial equations and the Polanyi-Dubinin potential theory. It is shown that the virial equations do not fit the experimental data. On the other hand, the potential theory yields a well-defined characteristic curve for the equilibrium data of each adsorbate over a broad temperature range. A method is proposed to evaluate the vapor pressure of the adsorbate from boiling to critical temperature. The values of the limiting volume of the adsorbed film obtained for the four paraffins are in good agreement. By using the critical temperature as a scaling factor, a single equation is obtained for the characteristic curve of ethane, propane, and n-butane, while methane adsorption follows a different expression.
