Abstract
Biogas primarily consists of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), representing 50%–70% and 30%–50% of the total volume, respectively. Conversion of biogas (mainly methane) could represent a meaningful complementary source of fuels and chemicals without the involvement of fossil resources in the near future. This chapter reviews the main developments in methane conversion technologies, including bioconversion and chemical conversion. The first section of this chapter introduces the background of methane, biogas, anaerobic digestion, and methane conversion technologies. The second section reviews bioconversion of methane, including microorganisms, biochemistry, related biotechnology, and future prospects. The third section provides an overview of the current development of chemical methane reforming technologies including dry reforming, steaming reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming, and tri-reforming. The last section concludes the chapter and introduces the future trends.
