Materials Technology in Steam Reforming Processes

Publisher Summary This chapter demonstrates the ICI naphtha reforming process. The catalytic steam reforming process is markedly lower both in production cost and in capital investment than processes based on coal and, being very flexible, is capable of producing either high calorific value town gas, rich in methane, or almost pure hydrogen. The development of high-temperature alloys and methods of fabricating them have, therefore, substantially contributed to the success of the process. The reaction between naphtha and steam over a nickel-based catalyst is capable of producing a wide range of possible product gases depending upon the conditions of operation of the reformer. Only fuels containing very low amounts of vanadium can be burnt in the primary reformer furnace otherwise vanadium attack would take place on the very hot reformer tubes. Corrosive attack by hot carbonic acid solutions in the condensing regions of the make-gas heat recovery train must be avoided by a suitable choice of materials of construction coupled with careful design of the equipment so as to avoid high impingement velocities.
