The novel rhenium catalysts Re/HZSM-5 were studied for the catalytic performances of dehydrocondensation of methane towards C2-hydrocarbons and benzene at 1–3 atm and 873–1023K. EXAFS and TG/DTA/Mass studies suggest that the metallic Re highly dispersed on HZSM-5 zeolite is an active phase for the reaction in contrast to Mo carbide for Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. The addition of a few % of CO/CO2 to methane feed results in the stable catalytic performances owing to the effective suppression of coke formation on Re/HZSM-5 catalysts. It was suggested that the bifunctional catalysis consisting of methane dehydrogenation on Re and oligomerization of C2-intermediates on HZSM-5 having proper pore-sizes around 5is for the dehydrocondensation of methane towards benzene.
