Blackfoot disease is an endemic peripheral vascular disease, clinically starting with
numbness or coldness of one or more of the extremities, resulting in black discoloration, ulceration or gangrenuous changes. Our epidemiologic study of blackfoot disease has disclosed that certain environmental factors are suspected to be the main cause of the disease. In our second report, the causal association of artesian well (deep well) water with the occurrence of the disase was strongly suspected. The present study on the physicochemical characteristics of drinking water in endemic blackfoot disease areas which was started three years ago is aimed at the
further clarification of relationships between agent, environment and host in natural
history of blackfoot disease.
