Phenols are converted to salicylaldehydes with paraformaldehyde, MgCl2–Et3N in THF, and subsequent treatment with methyl (triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetate gave the corresponding methyl ortho-hydroxycinnamate derivatives. The sequence is conveniently carried out as a one-pot procedure.
