Abstract
Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is used to either store or treat water (or a both). MAR systems that have a primary treatment function include aquifer storage transfer and recovery (ASTR), aquifer recharge and recovery (ARR), dune filtration, soil-aquifer treatment, and riverbank filtration. ASTR systems recharge using wells and recover using separate wells. Water quality improvements occur by a variety of physical, chemical, and biological process during unidirectional flow between the recharge and recovery wells. ARR systems involve recharge by land application and local recovery using wells. Recharged groundwater commonly passes through different geochemical (redox) environments, which can increase pathogen and chemical contaminant removal. The efficacy of pathogen and chemical contaminant removal depends on the physical and chemical properties of the vadose and/or phreatic zones, and residence times. High degrees of aquifer heterogeneity can allow by bypassing of aquifer treatment and shorter residence times than would occur under more homogeneous aquifer condition
