Abstract
Clinical evidence has linked the eating of certain foods to migraine headaches. Foods avoided by migraine sufferers include chocolate, cheese, dairy products, citrus fruits, alcohol, fried foods, onions, tea, coffee, pork and seafood. Headache reactions have been observed in patients treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, including tyramine and other vasoactive amines. Tyramine is found in cheese, chianti wine and fruits, and vasoactive amines are released in allergic reactions. Other food substances, such as caffeine, tartrazine, sodium nitrite, sodium glutamate and other food additives precipitate headache. Thus, trial periods, in which suspected migraine-producing foods are eliminated from the diet, are recommended for persons with migraine.
