Abstract
Most Americans are concerned about saving the environment, but their levels of commitment differ. There are five environmental types. <>True-blue greens are 11% of the population; their statistics show that they are very environmentally concerned, are the highest educated and highest salaried, and consist of both conservatives and liberals. <>Greenback greens are another 11% of the population; they are most willing to pay more for environmentally safe products, are well educated and salaried, and have children. <>Sprouts consist of 26%, are ambivalent about environmental regulations, and their views most closely reflect the majority of Americans. <>Grousers make up 24%; they are indifferent to the environment but rationalize their indifference. <>Basic browns are the final 28%; they are not environmentally active at all, feel that individuals cannot make a difference, and are the most socially and economically disadvantaged.
