Abstract
The isolation of esterases and other organic anions from freshwater sediment by electrophoresis on acrylamide gel is described. Six yellow anions were separated from each of the sediments from Singletary lake, N. C., (acid, highly coloured), a small brook in Duke forest, Kerr lake, N. C., and lake Victoria, E. Africa. Four enzymes catalysing the hydrolysis of a-naphthyl acetate were found in the sediments from the brook. The technique described can be easily adapted to run at acid pH values to separate cations instead of anions.
