The mutagenic activity of benzotrifluoride and of tweleve differently substituted molecules was evaluated in a number of microbial systems. The short-term tests used were: (1) DNA damage and repair test "rec-assay" with the Bacillus subtilis repair deficient mutant recE4. (2) Ames test with the five standard Salmonella typhimurium strains in the absence and presence of metabolic activation. (3) Gene conversion and mitotic crossing-over with Saccharomyces cerevisiae 6117 strain in the absence and presence of metabolic activation. In no case was genotoxic activity demonstrated. Strong differences in the antimicrobial activity of the compounds tested were observed.
