The Sleipner field in the North Sea, will produce a large part of Norway's natural-gas supply to the European Union. The produced gas needs to be treated and carbon dioxide partially removed before the gas can be shipped through the export pipelines to market. The project will extract approximately 1 million tpy of CO sub(2) from its sales gas, which, rather than being emitted to the atmosphere, will be injected into the Utsira aquifer some 1000 m under the seabed. The Sleipner CO sub(2) removal and aquifer-storage scheme is outlined, along with the R&D involved.
