4,4'-Thiobis(6- t -butyl- m -cresol) (TBBC) is used in the rubber and plastics industries as an antioxidant. TBBC is also used as a stabilizer in polyethylene and polyolefin packaging materials for foodstuffs. Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies were conducted by administering TBBC (99% pure) in feed to groups of male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice for 15 days, 13 weeks, and 2 years. Genetic toxicology studies were conducted in Salmonella typhimurium and cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells.
