Abstract
For the last four decades, scientists have been concerned with climate change and its impact on a national, international, and global scale. Global climate change is evident in many parts of the world, which affects especially droughts, floods, and flash floods in addition to agricultural products and many human activities in an unusual manner. In the past, natural climate changes have forced many societies to migrate from arid and drought (water stricken) locations for better living conditions because every culture and civilization has to depend on and adapt to environmental conditions, among which the most significant factors are pleasant effects of weather and atmospheric conditions in terms of climate, hydrological cycle, and water resources. This chapter provides basic information about climate change and its possible impact on sustainable human development. A detailed account on the atmospheric chemistry composition and about its slight change due to anthropogenic activities is presented with simple explanations. A simple model for 1°C global warming increment is explained, as a result of which the climate belts are bound to shift toward the polar regions by 250–300km. The manner in which one can adapt to climate is presented in step-by-step detail. Drought disasters and desertification coupled with climate change and their impacts on water resources are given through factual data from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and Turkey. The climate change preparation task faced by metropolitan cities is explained with applications from Istanbul City, Turkey. The basic concepts in any climate model structure are explained with appropriate downscaling procedures and applications for Riyadh city, KSA, and Istanbul City, Turkey. Among the adaptation procedures, groundwater recharge and rainfall harvesting are suggested in addition to balanced and optimum management of available water resources.
