Overview of carbon capture and storage
Abstract
This chapter gives an initial overview of the technologies for CO2 capture and storage, both currently available and under development, as an introduction to the more detailed discussion in subsequent chapters. The various options for capture from large stationary sources are first discussed, as well as the possibility of direct air capture. Geological storage of captured carbon is then described, as well as the less mature options of storage in the oceans and in the terrestrial ecosystem. Opportunities to reuse captured CO2 are introduced before the chapter concludes with a brief description of the application of life-cycle analysis to carbon capture and storage.
