Styrene is polymerized by utilizing such chemistry of metal dithiocarbanates. A living polymerization of styrene with halogen-free initiating systems that consist of a transition metal dithiocarbanate Mt{SC(S)NR2}n[Mt(R2dtc)n; Mt = Fe(III), Ru(III), Cu(II); R = ethyl or benzyl; n = 2 or 3] and 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), is discussed.
