Abstract
The association of proflavine in aqueous and methanol solutions was studied spectrophotometrically and the results compared with those obtained with acridine orange. The interaction of proflavine with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) was also studied, both in water and methanol. The qualitative behaviour of the two dyes is similar, however the association constant of proflavine in water is almost two orders of magnitude lower than that of acridine orange. On the other hand, neither substantial differences are observed in non-aqueous solution between the two dyes, nor in their interaction with a polyelectrolyte. © 1990.
