Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present data showing that hydrated alumina can be used as a fire-retardant filler in styrene-polyester casting compounds to replace mineral fillers such as feldspar and silica as well as the often used fire retardants - antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffin. Styrene-polyester compounds made with hydrated alumina have superior oxygen index values at lower volume cost than compounds containing antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffin. Results of an experimental study are presented and discussed in terms of practical recommendations.
