Abstract
Copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride in bulk and in solution is being studied with renewed interest. This system deviates markedly from the concept of the terminal mechanism. At present two different concepts, namely, the penultimate group effect and the participation of monomer-monomer charge transfer complex in propagation, are often applied to this system. In this communication the author presents a comparative analysis of composition of copolymers of styrene and maleic anhydride in relation to the two cited models. It is demonstrated that compositional data of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymerization in bulk or in solutions can be interpreted satisfactorily in terms of the complex model.
