A large number of binary polymer systems was examined in the melt, with a simultaneous analysis of their thermodynamic state is characterized by the parameter of polymer-polymer thermodynamic interaction chi23 and the phase diagram; i.e. on the basis of thermodynamic data, binodal and spinodal curves were plotted defining the regions of stable, metastable, and unstable states of the binary system. Among the pairs of polymers investigated were different combinations of high-density and low-density polyethylene (PE), polyoxymethylene (POM), polypropylene, cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer. polycaproamide, polystyrene (PS), polycarbonate (PC), etc. The data obtained for mixtures of polymer homologues not only confirm the general relationship of the change in viscosity as a function of the thermodynamic state of the system, but also show that the changes in rheological characteristics that can be achieved by introducing small quantities of one polymer into another can also be achieved by certain mixing of fractions of different molecular weight.
