Light-sensitive materials may be made from copolymers of p-formylstyrene (CH2=CH-C6H4-COH) with styrene (FSS) or methylmethacrylate (FSM) by oxidizing the aldehyde group to a peroxide one; these have various important technological characteristics related to macromolecular structure. Solid-state photostructuring and photodestruction predetermine the lithographic features and are substantially dependent on the position of the functional centers in the chains. The authors examined the role of these centers in supermolecular structuring during oxidation by reference to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) oxidized for 4 and 6 h correspondingly in the presence of acetic and benzoic anhydrides. The vibrational spectra of the initial and oxidized polymers have closely constant intensities for the bands related to the CH, CH2, and CH3 groups in the macromolecular chains, which indicates that the chains retain their composition and structure and which enables one to use these intensities as internal standards.
