Abstract
The copolymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate and sodium-4(N-sulfophenyl) maleimide proceeded in an alternating fashion in water when free radically initiated. This is the first example of such a reaction in water. The resulting copolymer is a new sulfonate polyelectrolyte; it was also prepared by modification of poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride).
